8/24/2016 Website ChangesHave you been noticing all our exciting updates recently? It can be tough to keep track of all the little, positive things that happen week to week when we live such hectic lives. It's even tougher when our social media feeds are full of so much information from friends, family, news sources, apps and games. To combat some of that noise, here are our newest changes, all listed in one convenient place.Read on for more details! As always, we would love to hear what you think! Please share your resources, advice, and suggestions. The Brunner Literacy Center exists and thrives because of you, our community. We work hard to bring you our best so that you, in turn, can bring your best. In this way, we all benefit. 1. Tutor Central Tutor Central is a brand new section for teachers, tutors, and volunteers. Its three main content areas include Resources, Master Teacher Interviews, and Location information. The Resources tab is organized first by type of resource and second by subject area. Whether you are interested in what our local libraries have to offer, what the UN has discovered about international literacy trends, or what math worksheets are helpful for students with learning disabilities, the Resources tab will have what you need. The Master Teacher Interviews tab presents a compilation of transcripts. Every other month, in time for each new BLC Bulletin, I will sit down and talk with one of the BLC's "Master Teachers," leaders in their subject areas. The first one is with Terri Gilbert, ESOL Specialist. Check back occasionally for advice and stories from your fellow volunteers! The Locations tab gives you information about our new branch locations. Here you can find their addresses, Program Managers, and opening dates. 2. Fundraising Progress for the 2016 BLC 5k Walk/Run Our 4th Annual 5k Walk/Run is only about two months away! Our fundraising goal this year is $25,000, which we aim to achieve through event sponsorships, race registrations, and raffle ticket sales. To build momentum and to celebrate successes, we are reflecting our fundraising progress on the bookshelf image at the bottom of our 5k page. A physical banner of the bookshelf is now hanging inside the front door of the BLC. Each book represents $1,000 raised! If you have not registered for the 5k yet, simply visit Speedy-Feet (here) and put in your info before October 16th to make sure you get your t-shirt at the race! If you or your company is interested in sponsoring our event, please contact me, Bridget Shingleton, at 937-567-9600 ext. 1007 for more information regarding pricing and benefits. 3. New Tutor Orientations With all the growth the BLC has been experiencing this year (and even more on the horizon!) we are in need of capable, compassionate tutors more than ever. We have created an Events page specifically for letting you know when upcoming orientation sessions will be held. Check it frequently, and be sure to share it with your friends and family members who may be interested in giving their time to students in need. For more information, or to register for an orientation, contact Pat Gill at 937-567-9600. 4. Our Supporters Since we rebuilt our website a couple months back, one thing we have been missing is formal recognition of our biggest supporters. These are the organizations, associations, and corporations that generously donate the funds that keep our spaces occupied and our bookshelves full. Without their support, the Brunner Literacy Center couldn't exist. Without proper financial resources, there would be no staff to organize the daily operations. Without five years of such generosity, 800 students in Dayton would not have received the help they needed. To our grantors, our donors, and our volunteers, thank you. We are here for our students, and we are here because you are. Onward!
