Why Literacy Matters

Picture
Poor literacy skills lead to trouble accessing healthcare, reading medicine bottles, and understanding food labels and nutrition information.
Picture
75% of incarcerated people either have low literacy levels or did not graduate from high school. Educated inmates are 43% less likely to return to prison.
Picture
70% of people who receive welfare assistance have low literacy skills. 43% of people at the lowest literacy levels live in poverty.
Picture
Illiteracy is generational. When parents have low literacy skills, their children have a 72% chance of being in the lowest literacy levels themselves.
Picture
Every year 1 in 6 young adults drops out of school. That's over 1.2 million people every year who do not earn high school diplomas.
Picture
Unemployment, loss of tax revenue, and low productivity due to illiteracy cost the United States in excess of $225 billion every year.
