The BLC offers four program areas.
With a team of around 130 active volunteers, the Brunner Literacy Center offers educational programs in four main areas. Students are matched with the program area that is best aligned with their goals and starting skill levels, and each student's individualized plan is further customized according to desired timeline, availability, learning styles, and more.
Adult Basic Education |
The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program brings an adult student's reading and math competence levels up to 6th-grade proficiency. Those who have mastered ABE content are considered ready for the GED® program.
|
GED® Preparation |
The GED® program prepares an adult to earn a GED® credential by covering a 7th-12th-grade curriculum. This program explores the GED® exam's four subject areas, provides practice testing, and develops higher-level writing and reading comprehension skills.
|
Continuing Education |
The Continuing Education (CE) program offers opportunities for individualized study beyond a GED® or high school diploma. Students' CE goals could include preparation for college entry, professional licensure or certifications, or other qualifications necessary for a career.
|
English Language Learning |
The English Language Learning (ELL) program provides an adult who is not a native English speaker with skills in English conversation, reading, and writing. According to individual need and desire, involvement in this program can include preparation for U.S. citizenship.

- Contact us.
You call the BLC (937-567-9600) or submit the form below to let us know what your goals are. - Make an intake appointment.
A member of our program staff work with you to schedule a first appointment so we can get to know each other better. Intake appointments are typically offered on Mondays and Wednesdays, but we can work with your schedule. - Visit BLC Shiloh Springs for your intake appointment.
When you come in for your intake appointment, you will sit down with a staff member to share some more information about your background and your goals. You will also take a short test that helps us understand what materials and lesson plans will be the best fit to help you achieve your goals. - Meet your tutor.
Shortly after your intake appointment, a program staff member will match you with one or more tutors, depending on your needs. You and your tutor will get each other's contact information so you can schedule your first meeting together. At that meeting, you and your tutor will get to know each other, decide on your meeting schedule, and go over your learning materials. - Work toward your goals.
Once you and your tutor have made your schedule, you will meet regularly to work on your lesson plans. Your learning plan is made just for you, so it is important to attend every appointment and do any assigned homework. Improving your skills takes a lot of dedicated, hard work, and everyone at the BLC is here to support you every step of the way.

BLC students are lifelong learners.
The Brunner Literacy Center serves any interested adult learner.
BLC students are men and women, younger and older, professionally experienced and just getting started in careers, native English speakers and those whose English-language journeys are in progress.
Some students want to earn a GED® credential, while others want to brush up on their skills to enter professional training for their career. Still others help their kids with their homework, read to their grandchildren, or learn essential vocabulary for health and well-being.
No matter what a person's goal is, the BLC is here to help.
