The BLC received a tremendous donation of supplies today from the Farrell family and their friends. These gifts will last the Center a long time, benefitting our students, volunteers, and staff, as well as substantially easing the financial burdens of certain aspects of daily site maintenance.
When the Farrells first contacted the BLC back in October, we had no idea what was in store for us. They explained that their family has a Christmas tradition of throwing a party for family and friends, and in lieu of personal gifts to their family, they select a charity and ask their guests to contribute something tangible to that organization. Everyone brings their gifts to the party, and the Farrells make the delivery later on. They asked for the BLC's wishlist of supplies, and we sent it to them. We already appreciated their interest and willingness to help, but we were not prepared for the sheer magnitude of their family and friends' generosity.
Check out these pictures:
We took inventory before finding storage places for all these gifts (no easy feat!), and here's approximately what we received:
Absolutely incredible. The BLC is deeply grateful to the Farrells, their families, and their friends for this beautiful Christmas gift!
Giving Tuesday is a day to celebrate the best parts of the human spirit. It is a day to reflect on community, to consider the bigger picture, and to give back to the organizations that provide crucial services to people in need.
This year, Giving Tuesday falls on November 29th. Charities and non-profit businesses all over the world participate in the day, and to great success so far in Giving Tuesday's short history. In just four years total donations made on Giving Tuesday have increased from $10 million in 2012 to just shy of $117 million in 2015. Donors find extra joy in joining the global generosity movement, sharing their gifts with their communities on this designated day.
The Brunner Literacy Center's goal is to raise $2,000 on Giving Tuesday 2016, and to raise $5,000 by the end of the year. Every amount helps the BLC to continue to provide educational services and materials to our students free of charge. In September 2016, the Brunner Literacy Center reached out to local government officials in Dayton, Ohio to do something special to honor the spirit of the day.
Brunner Literacy Center is a top 10 finalist in the Jump START Your Nonprofit contest from Modern Office Methods for nonprofit organizations in Dayton. The winning organization will receive new office equipment valued at $10,000.
This is a great opportunity for us, as you know firsthand the time it takes to raise this amount of money! This makeover would allow us to be more efficient in bringing literacy education to those who need it most. Typically, money raised tends to support our mission, rather than offset business technology costs.
We need your vote! The more votes, the better chance we have to win. Go to www.momnet.com and vote for the Brunner Literacy Center once a day beginning Monday, September 26 at 8 a.m. through Friday, October 7 at 5 p.m. We need this makeover to help us run better and serve our communities better!
Please share this contest with any friends, family, or colleagues who you feel would be willing to vote for us.
Happy voting and thank you for your support!

Fifth Street Brewpub, a local co-op, does a lot of good for the Dayton community. As a member-run business, they clearly see collaboration as a powerful way to achieve great results, and one of the ways FSB brings local organizations into the conversation is through their Guest Bartender Night series.
