In accordance with school guidelines issued by the Ohio Department of Health, the Brunner Literacy Center's physical locations will be closed from March 16th through April 3rd. However, staff members continue to work remotely to innovate learning solutions for our community.
A Message from the Executive Director
The Brunner Literacy Center is closed to all students and tutors until Monday, April 6th. We made the difficult decision to close based on the recommendation of the Ohio Department of Health regarding COVID-19 (coronavirus). I - and our entire BLC team - miss all of you, but we acknowledge that this separation is necessary for our collective health and well-being.
I know you're worried about the health of your students, your families and friends, your communities, and the world - and we are too. In addition to this health scare, there is uncertainty about food access, childcare, job stability, accessible learning, and other issues of equity. This situation reinforces the importance of education in creating strong, resilient communities, as literacy is a necessary tool to navigate these challenges. Chelsie reached out to our active Salem Ave students to ensure that they are supported, and Kateri is working closely with our colleagues at the Day Reporting Center to ensure that those students have support as well. At the BLC, the impact of COVID-19 makes our commitment to empowering individuals to live better lives through literacy so much more urgent and powerful.
Since the virus began to spread, people who identify as Asian American or Pacific Islander have faced increased discrimination. This impacts our community, as approximately 5% of BLC students identify as Asian Americans. As we move through the coming days, let's commit to literacy - and to fighting discrimination against our community members. Dayton Strong means being stronger together.
Thanks for understanding that championing literacy right now means putting the health of our community first. I hope that you can all stay healthy, rest, and maybe read a good book during this downtime.
I look forward to seeing you back at the BLC in April!
