Can you help us reach our goal of $5,000?
Join the movement on May 5th.
#GivingTuesdayNow
Since 2011 the BLC has provided free, individualized learning opportunities to more than 2,000 adults in the greater Dayton area. At the BLC we believe that education is a fundamental human right, that it honors personal dignity, diminishes suffering, and inspires hope for a better future.
If you share these values, you can help provide that hope. On May 5th, 2020 the BLC will participate in #GivingTuesdayNow, a global giving movement to support nonprofits and community organizations during the COVID-19 crisis. #GivingTuesday, begun in 2012, is traditionally held on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving as a day for people around the globe to come together in support of their local service agencies. In 2019 more than $500 million was raised for charitable organizations all around the world. Click here to learn more about the history of #GivingTuesday. The BLC has been honored to receive generous gifts on #GivingTuesday for several years, and now we are asking you to give what you can on May 5th, 2020. Your gifts will help sustain the BLC's efforts to provide distance learning opportunities to our students, ensuring that no one's education needs to suffer while we are unable to be together in person. |
Gift-Matching Announcement! The BLC is excited to share that an anonymous donor has promised to match up to $1,500 on May 5th, so the gifts you make for #GivingTuesdayNow will go even further toward helping us reach our goal.
Our partner will match the first $500, provide another $500 when we reach the halfway point, and another $500 when we achieve our goal. That means that if you, our community, can help us raise at least $3,500 on May 5th, the BLC will receive at least $5,000 that will help us continue to grow our distance learning opportunities for our tutors and students. |
What is distance learning?
Distance learning means learning opportunities offered at a safe distance.
The health and safety of our community are our top priorities, and the BLC is following Ohio's guidelines for school environments.
Even though the BLC's offices are closed for the time being, BLC staff are working hard from our homes to create, improve, and expand our tutors' and students' abilities to work together from their homes.
Distance learning can look a little different for everybody, depending on individual preferences:

Distance learning can look a little different for everybody, depending on individual preferences:
- Video conferencing and screen sharing allow tutors and students to have face-to-face learning sessions together while apart. Some available video tools include Zoom, Skype, and Google Meet.
- Phone and email communication are great ways for tutors and students to check in with each other, especially when video calling is not an option.
- Physical materials are still available to be picked up from the BLC on Salem Ave, by appointment only. To schedule your curbside material pickup, please email Kathy Reed to let her know what you need and to make an appointment for collecting your materials.
